I AM: KLOFAMA — Breaking Through the Noise

For Mats van Biljouw, music began in a bedroom in Horst, Limburg. Three years later, that bedroom-originated sound has taken him across the world.

At 23, Van Biljouw performs as KLOFAMA, one of the emerging names of a new hardtechno generation. He has appeared on major international stages, performed for thousands of people and sold out multiple all-night-long shows in the Netherlands and abroad. His journey from local producer to internationally recognised artist has happened with extraordinary speed.

That journey is the focus of I AM: KLOFAMA, a short documentary by production company CULT. Directed by Sten Hoeijmakers of CULT. Productions, the film follows Mats during a year in which his career reaches a new level—and the impact of that success becomes increasingly visible.

A year at full speed

The life of an international DJ is defined by movement. For Mats, airports, hotel rooms, backstage areas and performance venues have become part of a constant cycle. Each destination brings a new audience and another opportunity, but also another demand on his time, energy and attention.

On stage, KLOFAMA represents the intensity of contemporary hardtechno. His performances take place within a scene that is growing rapidly, with artists and audiences connecting across borders. The scale of his career is reflected in the platforms where he has performed, including Blackworks, Verknipt, Rotterdam Rave and Teletech. He has also appeared at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

Yet the film does not remain in the world of stages and crowds. It follows Mats back to Horst, where his relationship with music began and where he still returns. The contrast between his international career and his hometown offers the documentary its central perspective.
